Outdoor Retailer 2018 kicks off in Denver

Outdoor Retailer 2018 kicks off in Denver

So the first day of the first day that the Outdoor Retailer and Snow Show hosts in Denver kicked off last night with a media preview to whet the appetites of outdoors enthusiasts.

Before heading inside, though, I had to taste a little of Colorado's outside, on the Red Rocks Trail at Red Rocks Ampitheatre in Morrison, Colo. Wow, this place is beautiful!

At the Media Preview, I sampled a little of what will be on display all week. Today's topic is foot fun. So many shoes a girl can get giddy over, and there is nothing to do with high heels here, thankfully!

My favorite running brand, Altra, (altrarunning.com) had their new shoe line on display and they are lighter and springier than ever. I'm really looking forward to trying the soft uppers of the Escalante on mixed-surface running routes, and thinking it might be time to try out some of Altra's running gear -- shirts, jackets and such -- as well.

Kodiak's (kodiakboots.com) new street boots are both fashionable and functional. This Canadian company has several nice-looking designs that can be worn after the real outdoors adventures are over. They also are warm, which is a must for those like me, living in a far north climate such as Alaska.

Also intriguing to me is Oboz's (obozfootwear.com) insulated and waterproof hiking boots. I'm a minimalist when it comes to hiking, even in Alaska, but sometimes a big boot just does the trick. The Women's Jumiper is wool-lined and form fitted to help keep your footing stable in the mountains, and the lighter Sapphire low-profile shoe could prove handy on faster day hikes on drier days.

Finally, there is Joules' (joulesusa.com) autumn and winter Welly collection that is fun, fashionable -- and in a place like Alaska -- also functional. Who says function has to be all gray and brown?

I'm split all around. I'd love to bring back two or three pairs of each of these fantastic new lineups, but budgets and suitcase space won't allow it.
